25% rPET in Plastic Bottles by 2025 – What Producers Need to Know

From January 1, 2025, new rules will come into force requiring PET bottles to contain at least 25% recycled plastic material. This is part of the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUP Directive) and aims to promote a more circular economy by reducing the need for virgin plastic.  At Creopack we offer a wide range of PET bottles in rPET (from 25% up to 100% recycled material). We are constantly expanding our range to meet market guidelines and needs.

But what does this mean for you as a producer? Let’s go through the main aspects.

What products are covered?

The new requirements specifically apply to PET bottles used for drinks with a volume of up to three liters. This includes, for example, bottles for:
Water
Soft drinks
Juice
Other drinks packaged in PET bottles

What is rPET?

Recycled plastic, often referred to as rPET (recycled polyethylene terephthalate), is plastic that is collected, processed and converted into new material. By using rPET, we reduce the need for virgin PET, which in turn helps to save resources and reduce carbon emissions.

How does this affect you?

As a producer, you need to ensure that at least 25% of the material in your plastic bottles is recycled as of 1 Jan 2025. This means that you will have to replace your packaging that does not contain recycled material.  You must also be able to demonstrate that your packaging meets the requirements. If you are one of our customers, we will assist you with the necessary documentation.

Summary
The new requirements for recycled material in plastic bottles play a key role in reducing the environmental impact of plastics and promoting a circular economy. As a producer, it is important to start preparing now to ensure compliance when the rules take effect. By taking proactive steps, you can not only meet the legal requirements but also contribute to a more sustainable future.
